A Quick Primer on the Metaverse

— 2 minute read

You may have heard of Facebook’s new focus on the metaverse and re-branding to Meta, which is totally not a distraction from all of the social ills their profit-motivated platforms have been causing from inflaming racism and hate which contributed to the rise of figures like Donald Trump, to driving teenage girls to suicide, to likely causing a genocide in Myanmar.

Recent technical 'innovations' like the metaverse may just seem like new forms of entertainment and social connectiveness, but like Facebook itself, in practice they are so clearly meant to bring people from free, democratic and meaningful communities, and into an inhuman world that is controlled by corporations which can profit from your every move.

As someone who works with and follows technology closely, it saddens me that we are ignoring all the problems in our society that could be helped with technology and instead focusing on creating profit-driven dystopias where we cede our freedoms to sociopathic elites in an inauthentic environment free of any real human meaning, all to escape the problems created by these same profit-driven, sociopathic elites.
