Amazon Prime Day

— 2 minute read

There hasn’t been anyone harder hit economically by this pandemic than service and retail workers, and small business owners. Amazon and Jeff Bezos, on the other hand, has exploited and benefited immensely from the global disaster.

With Amazon Prime Day coming up, instead of contributing to Bezos’ unethical amount of wealth, please consider supporting your local businesses and their workers by spending your money there instead. Remember that the price you pay for goods and services doesn’t include the total, realized costs, especially the long term costs to society and the environment.

Convenience often comes with great cost as well and the convenience of Amazon is contributing to the further decline of our communities by extracting wealth out of them, while avoiding taxes in a way that small businesses cannot do. It is clear that money spent in our communities usually results in money staying in our community (as long as you aren’t shopping at places like Walmart or Dollarama). Please support your community because Amazon won’t be there to support you when you need it.

You could also take it a step further and do what I have done by deleting your Amazon account. There is more information about how to do that here.
