Here's how you end an economy-threatening rail labour disruption
The news about a potential work stoppage at CP rail is subtly being set up to blame workers demanding better treatment in a highly-profitable and monopolistic industry, when in fact it is CP who plan on locking out workers today. Either way, why shouldn't workers take advantage of the rare occasion when economic conditions favour them as is the case today with the supply-chain issues our economy is facing?
After all, corporations and the wealthy take advantage of every opportunity they are given in an economy that already favours their power, such as in times of economic downturns when they buy up as much cheap assets they can, or taking Covid relief despite immense profits and using that to buy back shares instead of re-investing in their workforce.
So how do you end an economy-threatening rail labour disruption? If you care more about the profits of corporations above all, you could issue back-to-work or essential-worker legislation, as Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe is calling for. If one actually cares about workers and their families, however, you would tell the company to get their asses to the bargaining table, and to negotiate with your workers in good faith.
It really is that simple and not at all a novel concept. However, I wouldn't expect governments bought and paid for by corporations and the wealthy to make the mistake of putting people before profits and actually representing the true drivers of our economy, the workers.
