Shares of the week

— 3 minute read

I'm going to do something new and compile a small list of links to things I found this week that were interesting enough to share. I will try to do this every week. It could be a link to an article, a podcast, a YouTube video, a recipe, you name it. Hope you enjoy this first entry!

Recipes

  • Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies - My go to cookie recipe is usually an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie recipe I have had since I was a young child. However, I decided to switch it up this week and make one of my favourite foods, peanut butter, the center of attention. The recipe I found online looked good but I swapped out about half the chocolate chips for dry roasted, unsalted peanuts. These cookies are delicious and I definitely will be making them again.

Movies

  • Tenet - This is the final trailer for the mysterious new movie from Christopher Nolan, one of my favourite directors. Starring John David Washington, this looks to be yet another great action thriller from Nolan, yet none of the released trailers give anything further away. I already grabbed tickets to see it next week, after it is released internationally, including in Canada, on August 26 (I'll be there with my mask on).

Health and Science

  • Making Sense: "The Nature of Human Nature" - A conversation with Robert Plomin - In this podcast from Sam Harris, he discusses with his guest the role that DNA plays in making us who we are. One of the things that stuck with me after listening was the notion that "parents matter but they don't make a difference", which means having good parents is a good thing but in the end, a child's outcomes are going to be determined primarily by their DNA. I always enjoy Sam's thought-provoking conversations and this one is no different.

Politics and Social Issues

  • Why Conservatives Get Karl Marx Very, Very Wrong - There are plenty of things to be critical about Marx on, but the right is constantly missing their mark. This article from Matt McManus at Jacobin discusses how conservative pundits can't go into detail about their critiques because of how it would expose deep-rooted inconsistencies in right-wing doctrines.
  • Germany's biggest union calls for 4-day week to save thousands of jobs - Shortening the work week would be one way for workers to be better compensated for their labour but it could also save an economy damaged by a global pandemic, as this article explains.
  • A World to Win: "Proudly Socialist" - a conversation with Jeremy Corbyn - I saw this podcast pop up under Jacobin Radio's feed. I know Mr. Corbyn has been an essential figure in the modern socialist movement in the UK but I didn't know much beyond that. This podcast offers a glimpse into his life and into socialist politics in the UK as well as his country's disastrous handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
