Shares of the week
Note: You may have noticed that I share a lot of Jacobin articles, for which I have a subscription. If you run out of free articles and don't want to pay for a subscription, copy the URL, then go to https://outline.com/ and paste the URL in the box there to try to remove the paywall (this works for a lot of websites with paywalls, but I would strongly recommend supporting any journalism that you enjoy).
Software Development
I created the exact same app in React and Vue. Here are the differences. (title copied from source) - This is a great article using code examples to explain some of the fundamental differences in developing with React vs developing with Vue.
Bullshit
How to Speak Truth to Bullshit - Brené Brown talks about the connection between belonging and bullshit, how bullshit is different than lies, and how to maintain our civility when confronting bullshit.
Death to Bullshit - Websites are extremely susceptible to bullshit. Here is an example of digital bullshit from a web designer's point-of-view. Note: be sure to click on the "Turn bullshit on?" link.
Suicide Awareness
Judge dismisses province's application to remove Wascana Park teepee camp - Despite the Saskatchewan government's attempt to kick Tristen Durocher off of public lands, his courageous protest to raise awareness to the growing number of suicides up north was allowed to live on until its planned conclusion on Monday.
Labour
The Labor Abuses of Ellen DeGeneres - Labour abuses need to be treated similar to racial and sexual abuses of workers. Ellen is yet another in a long line of cruel capitalists that use their power to take advantage of those they consider beneath them while they use their fame to hide it.
Politics
The memeification of political discourse - Why does it always seem like conservative politicians hate people and think we are stupid? Erin O’Toole doesn’t think too highly of Canadians as this Twitter thread points out.
Canadian Heritage Minister Guilbeault Says Social Media Sites Linking to News Content Without Payment is “Immoral” - If the absolutely ludicrous idea of a link tax was to come to fruition, I would be charged each and every time an external link to a news website is clicked. As much as I hate Facebook, this extremely shortsighted idea would harm many more websites than just the social media behemoth they are targeting with this.
